Welcome to week 5 of “The Summer of “The Sound of Music”. In this talk we examine themes in the song “16 going on 17”. In the song, we see two teenagers who care about each other. In the song, the boy, Rolf, expresses his care for the girl, Liesl, by telling her that he’ll take care of her. She is happy and in love, and she agrees that she’ll depend on him. In our lives, we sometimes are like Rolf and take care of the people we care about. Sometimes we are like Liesl, willing to depend on others who we consider older and wiser. The questions we consider are twofold: at what point does caring for someone stray into control over them? And, at what point do we accept another person’s opinions and judgements about us, at the potential expense of our own wellbeing? Rev. Rhona Segarra shares ideas.
